Once granted, the CPLP residence permit follows the general regime applicable to temporary residence permits in Portugal: it is initially valid for two years, and may be renewed for successive periods of three years, or until five years of legal residence are completed, at which point a permanent residence permit may be requested.
During this period, the holder can live and work in Portugal, benefiting from access to essential social rights such as healthcare, education, and social security. Nevertheless, and particularly importantly, a more favorable regime is expected to be maintained for citizens of Portuguese-speaking countries, who may be able to obtain Portuguese nationality after seven years of legal residence.
This means that, even in a scenario of stricter legislative requirements, citizens of the CPLP will continue to benefit from a clear and differentiating advantage in accessing the Portuguese passport.
